On April 19th, 1989 there was an explosion inside the second gun turret aboard the USS Iowa, while the ship was firing practice rounds 300 miles off the coast of Costa Rica. Forty-seven sailors were killed.

While I was only three at the time of the incident, it’s my earliest memory—I remember standing in the living room of our house at the time, seeing my mother wrapped up in the phone cord quietly explaining to someone that she did not know if my father was dead or alive.
