Bergen County is the most populous county in New Jersey, the most densely populated state. It is one of the original bedroom communities, a place where folks sleep between trips into New York. A couple of years ago I found myself living in this place, somewhere I would have never intentionally chosen—a world of heavy traffic, angry people, and dense sprawl. As I worked to come to terms with life in this intense and strange place, I began to photograph. I set out to chart, on foot, the areas I passed through and experienced on a regular basis.
